British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
